Breaking News: Explosives Found in Zoetermeer Car, Controlled Detonation Conducted
Zoetermeer, Netherlands – In a late-night operation, police discovered explosives hidden in a car and subsequently detonated them in a controlled fashion. Two suspects are currently in custody. The incident unfolded around midnight when authorities received a report of a suspicious vehicle. The area around the car was cordoned off, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was promptly deployed.
Video footage captured by the EOD team shows experts carefully removing the explosives from the vehicle and transporting them to a safe location, where they were safely detonated. The Noord-Aa beach in Zoetermeer served as the controlled detonation site.
The motivation behind the explosives in the car remains unclear, and an investigation is ongoing.Police have not yet revealed the type or quantity of explosives found.
Explosive Incidents on the Rise in the Netherlands
This incident comes amidst a surge in explosive attacks across the Netherlands. In 2024, there were 1130 such incidents, a stark contrast to the 212 recorded in 2021—a five-fold increase. Many of these explosions occur weekly, with severe injuries and fatalities in some cases, as seen recently in The Hague.
In approximately 80% of these incidents, the explosives consist of heavily modified fireworks filled with flash powder and a fuse. The perpetrators are often young men from troubled neighborhoods who have had prior encounters with the police.
