Ten Dead After Car Plows Into Crowd in New Orleans

In a shocking turn of events, a car rampaged into a crowd in New Orleans on Saturday evening, leaving ten people dead and several others injured. The incident unfolded during the Bayou Classic weekend, a popular and highly anticipated annual event featuring a football game between two historically Black colleges.

Eye-witnesses reported scenes of chaos and horror as the car, driven by a man identified as the 62-year-old Rooseveltotov Jefferson, plowed through the crowd gathered on New Orleans’ Frenchmen Street. The area is known for its vibrant nightlife, with bars and music venues drawing large crowds, particularly during high-profile events like the Bayou Classic.

According to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), Jefferson intentionally drove his car into the crowd. The department is treating the incident as a case of suspected terrorism. "We are working with our federal partners to determine if this was an act of terror," said NOPD spokespersonemet Sainte-Catherine.

Jefferson was initially at large but was later apprehended by police after a brief chase. He is currently in custody and cooperating with investigators. Authorities have not yet divulged a motive for the attack.

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community of New Orleans and the larger family of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In the wake of the atrocity, both schools, Grambling State University and Southern University, have released statements expressing their condolences to the victims’ families and pledging support.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell addressed the city in a solemn press conference, stating, "Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We will do everything in our power to support them in this unspeakably difficult time. We will also do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served."

As the investigation continues, the city of New Orleans mourns, and the nation watches in disbelief. In the face of such senseless violence, one thing is clear: the spirit of New Orleans and the HBCU community will not be broken.
