Stormy New Year’s Eve Leaves Trail of Destruction Across Argentina

In an unsettling start to 2025, a severe storm swept through two Argentine provinces, leaving significant damage in its wake. In Córdoba, the storm battered several towns, including Oncativo, where the roof of a hotel housing 300 New Year’s revelers was completely blown off. Meanwhile, in Santa Cruz, unprecedented rainfall led to flooding as the year came to a close. As a result, an orange alert for storms is in effect today in seven provinces, including Buenos Aires and the surrounding area.

Oncativo’s New Year Turns Violent

As locals rang in the new year in Córdoba’s Oncativo, the town braced for a severe storm. The fierce winds did not disappoint, tearing apart the roof of the ‘Campo Hotel “Nono Luigi”’ along the Córdoba-Rosario highway. Three people were hurt and rushed to the local hospital, reported <>. Along with the hotel, the storm toppled trees and left many Cordobans without power in places like Luque and Villa María. Authorities warned of ongoing risks and advised residents to take precautions.

Gobernador Gregores Underwater

In Santa Cruz, the town of Gobernador Gregores was the hardest hit by heavy rains, which caused widespread flooding and evacuations. The typically dry climate of the region was no match for the deluge, which dumped over 50 millimeters of rain, far exceeding the historical monthly average of just 8 millimeters. Although the rain has eased, many homes remain submerged, according to reports from La Opinión Austral. The provincial government is working to mitigate the damage as residents brace for more rain and possible evacuations.

Stormy Start to 2025 in Buenos Aires

The SmN issued an orange alert for the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) and surrounding regions. Temperatures have already soared to 30°C, with a FEELING of 33°C. Heavy rainfall is expected to hit the city and Greater Buenos Aires by 2 PM, with some areas expecting heavy downpours. Relief should come around 7 PM, with temperatures dipping to a more comfortable 22°C. The remainder of the week promises fair weather with minimal rainfall.

With the storm alert in full effect, residents are advised to take necessary precautions. Stay safe, everyone!
