Hundreds Protest Outside KPK Headquarters, Demand Arrest of PDI Perjuangan Politician
Tensions rise as demonstrators clash with police, vandalize property, and burn tires in Jakarta.
In a city-wide uproar, hundreds of individuals and members of the National Student Struggle for Democracy (Perjuangan Mahasiswa Nasional) took to the streets in Jakarta on the morning of December 23, 2024. Their target: the headquarters of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), where they demanded the immediate arrest of Harun Masiku, a senior PDI Perjuangan politician suspected of bribery in relation to DPR RI member appointments. Masiku has yet to be apprehended and remains at large, having been included in the Daftar Pencarian Orang (DPO).
The protest, which began peacefully, quickly escalated into a scene of chaos. Demonstrators hurled stones, destroyed property, burned tires, and vandalized the KPK building in an expression of their frustration and outrage. Security personnel struggled to maintain order, with tense confrontations playing out on the streets.
In response to the unrest, the KPK swiftly released a statement through its spokesperson, Tessa Mahardika Sugiarto. The commission warned that anyone engaging in acts of anarchy, vandalism, or violence would face legal consequences.
