Local Politician Sentenced for Sexual Relationship with Minor

A local politician in a municipality on the east coast of Norway has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay NOK 40,000 in compensation for engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor. The man, who was in his early 20s at the time, initiated the relationship with a 15-year-old girl when she was still 14.

The relationship began in the fall of 2017 and ended in the spring of 2019. Both families were aware of the relationship and the age difference, but it was not until later that the woman realized that what she had experienced was actually a form of abuse.

The maximum penalty for this crime is up to six years in prison, but the man was sentenced to community service and compensation after all mitigating circumstances were taken into account. The verdict was unanimous.

The man is currently serving as a municipal council representative in his community. The Conservative Party, to which he belongs, has no authority, neither locally nor nationally, to demand that anyone resign from an elected position. This decision is left to the individual.

Following a meeting with the local group leader on Friday, the man has informed the Conservative Party that he will seek to be excused from his position on the municipal council for the remainder of his term. If this is approved, he will step down from the council.

"I understand that he is seeking to be excused, and I think it’s a wise decision," said Tom Erlend Skaug, general secretary of the Conservative Party, in an interview with Nettavisen. Skaug also noted that the man had resigned from his party positions last fall, before the party became aware of the legal case.

"This is a serious matter that has resulted in a conviction. It’s serious that a Conservative Party member has been convicted of this kind of offense. It’s important in such a situation to consider that there are people involved on both sides, and to ensure that they are taken care of in the best possible way," Skaug said.

The man’s relationship with the girl was first revealed on social media, where he openly discussed it. The girl’s father testified in the Oslo District Court that they had found naked photos, videos of sexual acts, and sexually charged language in the messages between his 14-year-old daughter and the 20-year-old politician.

However, the girl’s father also testified that at that time, his daughter was in a very vulnerable phase, and they were afraid that reporting the relationship would only damage their relationship further. They were primarily concerned with not losing their daughter.

The politician’s mother testified that her son seemed very much in love. While she thought the girl was very young, she accepted the relationship because the girl’s parents had also accepted it. The politician, who was then a deputy in the municipal council for another party, was open about his relationship with the girl on social media.

In an interview with Nettavisen, the leader of the Conservative Party’s local branch said that they are concerned about protecting the man and ensuring that he takes responsibility for his actions. The local branch first became aware of the case after the verdict was handed down in December. The man has since decided to seek to be excused from his position on the municipal council, choosing between this option and applying for a leave of absence.

The case highlights the complex nature of relationships between adults and minors, and the importance of understanding the power dynamics at play. It also raises questions about the responsibility of political parties and local branches in addressing such issues within their ranks.
