A chilling reminder of this hidden danger occurred in June last year, when a family of seven—five adults and two minors—perished in a house fire in Cuba. The inferno was triggered by the explosion of an electric motor inside the residence, a consequence of faulty lithium-ion batteries, according to initial reports by official news portal Cubadebate.
This tragic incident is not isolated. In the United States, similar incidents have been on the rise. In July, an electric bus caught fire while parked in a depot in Connecticut. A month later, an electric scooter sparked a blaze in a New York City apartment, claiming the lives of a 5-year-old girl and a 36-year-old woman. More recently, in September, a house in Massachusetts was devastated by a fire suspected to have been caused by an electric scooter’s battery.
According to NBC News, lithium-ion batteries have become commonplace in various new transport modes and everyday appliances. These batteries are also found in residential electrical systems powered by solar panels. However, when damaged or overheated, they can release toxic, flammable gases, making fires fast-spreading and notoriously difficult to extinguish.
The Fatal Impact of Indoor Electric Motor Fires
UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has simulated the devastation that an electric motor fire can wreak indoors. In a 2023 study, an electric scooter was parked in a living room, positioned against a wall and near a sofa. The scooter’s safety features were disabled, and it was left charging. After two hours, smoke started accumulating beneath the seat, soon followed by a fiery explosion.
The explosion immediately engulfed the living room in flames, shattering windows within 15 seconds. In just 12 minutes, the room was burned beyond recognition, along with the sofa. Moreover, deadly gases produced by the exploding batteries contaminated the area. Steve Kerber, Executive Director of FSRI, warns: "This happens quickly and doesn’t give people much time to react."

To mitigate the risks associated with electric motor batteries, consumers are advised to:
- Purchase motors with certified batteries.
- Avoid overcharging batteries beyond their capacity.
