About 70 people gathered as the roughly seven-meter juvenile female humpback whale floated between Point Cartwright and Mudjimba late on Tuesday. “When it came ashore it was already dead so it was not in distress,” Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli told AAP. Authorities monitored the site through the night to maintain public safety during school holidays at the popular stretch of coastline.

Early Morning Towing Operation Out to Sea

Local authorities successfully towed the whale carcass approximately 20 nautical miles offshore at about 5.30am on Wednesday, leveraging the morning high tide to clear the beach before dawn.

“It is extremely sad when you see a majestic animal like this washed up ashore,” Mayor Natoli told AAP. “It’s school holidays now and this is a popular stretch of beach. So it was really important that we were able to carefully and respectfully remove the whale out to sea before first light when the high tide came up.”

Scientific Sampling and Carcass Tracking

Before and during the disposal operation, samples were gathered from the humpback whale to establish its cause of death and conducted testing for bird flu. To prevent the carcass from drifting back to shore, workers fitted the whale with a GPS tracker to monitor its offshore movements and guide potential future interventions.

Mayor Natoli noted that the data collected from this incident will help the future management of carcasses. She also praised the local community for maintaining a safe distance and cooperating throughout the operation.
