Jakarta Summit Sets Formal Terms for Denmark-ASEAN Ties

Denmark and ASEAN convened their inaugural Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee meeting at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on 11 August 2026. The high-level gathering formally implements the framework for closer cooperation between the two regions, following Denmark’s official designation as an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner in January.

Adopting the Terms of Reference for a Five-Year Plan

Meeting at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, participating representatives formally adopted the committee’s terms of reference. Both sides agreed to build a comprehensive five-year plan targeting practical areas of cooperation. This newly minted committee now serves as the primary formal platform for managing and developing the partnership moving forward.

Targeting Energy Transition, Climate Adaptation, and Trade

Talks in the Indonesian capital spanned a broad spectrum of sectors. Discussions prioritized trade and investment, climate adaptation, energy transition initiatives, and the ASEAN Power Grid.

Delegates also surfaced additional targets for future collaboration, including green shipping, digitalisation, sustainable agriculture, circular economy, health, biotechnology, and smart cities. Security and civil priorities rounded out the agenda, with talks touching on cooperation in human rights, counterterrorism, transnational crime, and expanded exchanges between populations.

Moving Toward Institutional Realization and Structured Rollouts

With the terms of reference officially secured, the immediate operational priority centers on finalizing and executing the agreed five-year plan.
