President Donald Trump has expressed his desire for the U.S. to control the strategically important territory of Greenland, stating that it’s crucial for national security. In a Christmas message published on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the significance of Greenland to U.S. sovereignty and freedom, stating, "We need Greenland for the sake of national security, and we want to be there, and we will be."
Trump’s latest attempt to regain control of the autonomous Danish territory comes just days after he publicly declared that the U.S. needs to have control and ownership of Greenland for the sake of national security and freedom worldwide. This isn’t the first time Trump has explored the idea, as he famously offered to buy Greenland from Denmark in a 2019 tweet. At the time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen famously rejected the offer, calling it "absurd."
Greenland’s current leader, Múte B. Egede, has also dismissed Trump’s latest overtures, stating that Greenland is not for sale. Despite the setbacks, Trump appears undeterred, continuing to emphasize the strategic importance of Greenland to U.S. interests.
Trump’s desire to assert U.S. control over Greenland has been a point of contention in U.S.-Danish relations. In 2019, Trump’s suggestion to purchase the territory raised eyebrows and stoked controversy among Danish officials. Although the Danish government rejected the proposal, Trump’s latest comments serve as a reminder of his interest in the strategically located island nation.
