PDIP Veteran: Megawati Should Step Down After Hasto‘s KPK Status

Jakarta – Former PDIP cadre Effendi Simbolon has stirred the political pot by suggesting that PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri should step down following the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) naming Sekjen PDIP Hasto Kristiyanto as a suspect. PDIP spokesperson Guntur Romli suspects that Effendi’s views might be influenced by his recent meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"Effendi Simbolon just met with Jokowi, perhaps this is a result of their meeting which was not so positive for PDI Perjuangan," Guntur told reporters on Wednesday (8/1/2025).

Guntur then referenced Megawati’s statement on 12 December 2024, where she mentioned certain parties trying to disrupt PDIP. He believes Effendi’s comments confirm her earlier claims.

"Thus, it’s confirmed that there are indeed parties trying to disrupt our party," Guntur said.

Guntur also believes that Hasto’s status as a suspect is politically motivated, aiming to pressure Megawati to step down. Effendi Simbolon echoed similar sentiments, stating that PDIP needs a comprehensive evaluation, including its top leadership.

Effendi, who attended an event at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development in Jakarta, expressed concern over the legal issues currently facing PDIP. He believes that PDIP has never had a structural cadre with such a status before.

"An evaluation must be conducted, starting from the position of the party chairman. There needs to be a total renewal of the party’s leadership," Effendi said.

The PDIP veteran’s comments have sparked fresh discussions within the party, with many calling for a thorough review of its leadership and structure.
