Elderly Man Drowns at Ma Liu Shui Beach in Tuen Mun; Lifeguard Fails to Save Him

Tragedy struck at Ma Liu Shui Beach in Tuen Mun today when an elderly man drowned, despite the heroic efforts of a lifeguard who attempted to save him. The man, believed to be in his late 60s, was swimming alone when he encountered difficulties and began to struggle in the water.

The alarm was raised by passersby who immediately called for emergency services. A lifeguard swiftly responded, diving into the water and attempting to reach the man. Unfortunately, due to the rough seas and strong currents, the lifeguard was unable to reach the victim in time. By the time he was pulled from the water, it was too late.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and provided immediate medical assistance, before rushing the man to Tuen Mun Hospital. However, despite the best efforts of hospital staff, the elderly man was pronounced dead upon arrival.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of swimming alone, especially in areas with strong currents. Hong Kong’s beaches are federally protected and not manned by lifeguards daily, so it’s crucial for beachgoers to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines. Always swim with a buddy, stay within the designated swimming areas, and remember to keep an eye on children at all times.

The victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed, pending notification of family members. Police are treating the incident as an accidental drowning and will continue to investigate.
