BC Government Deepens Engagement with Families of Children with Support Needs

The British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) is continuing its commitment to actively listening to and collaborating with families, service providers and communities regarding supports for children and youth with support needs (CYSN). This ongoing dialogue aims to shape the future of services and ensure they are responsive to the evolving needs of British Columbian families.

Recent & Upcoming Opportunities for Input

Currently, the MCFD is hosting virtual information sessions to provide updates on improvements to CYSN supports, and services. These sessions, accessible via Microsoft Teams or phone, offer a direct line of communication between the ministry and those impacted by these services. A session scheduled for February 11th and February 12th has already taken place, with another scheduled for February 13th from 9 to 10 am PST.

Notably, a Parent Information Townhall originally planned for February 12th was cancelled to honour the Day of Mourning following a tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, demonstrating the government’s sensitivity to community events.

A History of Collaboration: 2023-2025 and Beyond

The current engagement efforts build upon extensive public consultation undertaken between 2023 and 2024. This period saw the MCFD actively seeking input to inform changes to CYSN services, responding to initial piloting of proposed changes in 2022. The results of this engagement have been compiled into reports, including the “Children and Youth with Support Needs: Engagement Report 2023-2025” and “Children and Youth with Support Needs: What We Learned 2025”, available on the BC government website.

Prior to this, in 2019, the ministry conducted user-experience research, contracting firms like Reciprocal Consulting and KPMG to gather insights from families, including Indigenous families, about their experiences navigating the CYSN system. This research focused on identifying opportunities to improve access, quality, and coordination of services.

Focus on Inclusivity and Cultural Safety

The MCFD emphasizes a distinctions-based approach when engaging with Indigenous communities, ensuring culturally safe and respectful dialogue. Funding has been provided to First Nations communities and Indigenous-led organizations to facilitate meaningful participation in these conversations.

Community-Led Collaboration & Engagement Grants

Beyond direct engagement, the province is supporting community-led initiatives through the Community-Led Collaboration Project. This project provides grants of $20,000 to 30 communities across British Columbia to design and implement inclusive conversations about CYSN services. The findings from these community engagements will be compiled into a report for the MCFD, directly influencing the future of CYSN services in BC.

What’s Next?

The MCFD continues to analyze data from various sources, including reports from the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth, to refine its understanding of the needs of CYSN and their families. The ministry encourages ongoing participation in engagement opportunities as they are announced.
