The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that average air temperatures last month reached 16.96C, matching the previous all-time monthly high established in July 2023. Because the difference between the two periods was a mere 0.01C, researchers consider them joint-highest in a observational dataset that stretches back to 1940.

Oceans Heat Up Under El Nino and Fossil Fuel Pressures

Global sea surface temperatures set a new daily high and tied for the hottest August on record, extending an ongoing three-month streak of unprecedented ocean warmth. According to scientific assessments, more than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases has been absorbed by the world’s oceans, sparing landmasses from even worse atmospheric spikes while inflicting severe damage on marine life, coral reefs, and coastal communities.
Overheated basins such as the Atlantic and Mediterranean shattered records alongside the tropical Pacific. In the Pacific, a powerful El Nino climate pattern is rapidly gathering strength. El Nino events release vast amounts of stored ocean heat into the atmosphere, temporarily nudging global temperatures upward and increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events thousands of miles away, from droughts in Africa to floods in Peru and wildfires in Australia.

Extreme conditions extended far beyond Europe. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the contiguous United States also endured its hottest summer on record. Meanwhile, regions home to approximately 900 million people lived through the hottest July ever observed.
