Heavy Rains Trigger Major Flooding in Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah

Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, were battered by intense rainfall on Monday, January 6, 2025, leading to severe flooding in all three cities. For several hours, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms caused flash floods, with water levels rising rapidly and sweeping away vehicles.

YouTube channel OneIndia captured the aftermath on Tuesday, January 7, showing cars being swept away, buses trapped in floodwaters, and other material losses. Amidst the chaos, residents were seen helping each other and evacuating to safer locations.

Arab News reported that the Red Crescent Medical Authority (RCMA) had bolstered its readiness to respond to extreme weather conditions in the holy cities’ vicinity. Around 1,420 staff were deployed, supported by 149 vehicles, including ambulances and emergency response vehicles. The RCMA urged residents to be cautious and follow official instructions, prioritizing safety while driving in extreme weather.

The National Meteorological Center of Saudi Arabia issued a red alert for Makkah Al-Mukarramah, warning of heavy rain, strong winds, and sleet. The intense storm reduced visibility and made road travel difficult and dangerous. The center predicted that these weather fluctuations would continue for the next few days.
