Tragedy Strikes Again in Gjerdrum: Double Murder Leaves Community in Shock
Just two weeks shy of Christmas, the small town of Gjerdrum on the outskirts of Oslo was rocked by a heinous crime. A double murder left the close-knit community reeling, as they prepared to say their final goodbyes.
A Mother and Child Gone Too Soon
On December 12, 34-year-old Anette Prydz Sjursen was found brutally murdered in her home. Her three-year-old daughter, May Elin, lay critically injured beside her. Despite valiant efforts, May Elin succumbed to her injuries a few days later.
The Husband and Father Faces Charges
May Elin’s father, Anette’s husband, has been charged with the murders. In a tragic turn of events, he confessed to the crime after contacting police himself.

Community United in Grief and Solidarity
Gjerdrum Church opened its doors the same evening, offering solace and a place to gather for the grief-stricken community. The municipal culture house also threw open its doors, providing a warm, welcoming space for those seeking comfort in the faces of friends and neighbors. crisis counseling was readily available for those who needed it.
"Not only is this terrible, it’s also unexpected. Many of us know each other here," said Sokneprest Jakob Furuset, reflecting the shock and sadness that had enveloped the town.
A Town United by Tragedy
This is not the first time Gjerdrum has faced such a devastating loss. In late 2020, a landslide claimed several lives, and once again, the tightly-knit community banded together to support one another in their time of need. It seems that unity and resilience are hallmarks of this small town, even in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

A Funeral to Remember Them
Anette and May Elin will be laid to rest together in Gjerdrum Church this Thursday at 1 pm. So many more years should have been ahead of them, and no words can fill the void left by their absence. But as the Gjerdrum community gather to say their final goodbyes, they do so with love, support, and unwavering solidarity. For the suffering of one is felt by all.
