Three individuals lost their lives and a 15-year-old U.S. citizen, Jason, remains critically injured following a violent ambush in Durango, Mexico, as reported by The New York Times. The attack occurred on December 27, 2024, as the family was visiting relatives in Santiago Papasquiaro.

Jason is set to be transported to Texas for medical care, having been initially treated at a local public hospital in Durango. The extent of his injuries is severe, with the publication noting that he suffered a "devastating head wound."

The family, hailing from Chicago, had embarked on a trip to Durango to spend time with their relatives. On the evening of the attack, they left their accommodation to purchase supplies. However, when local authorities discovered their vehicle around 11:00 PM, they found three deceased individuals with gunshot wounds and Jason critically injured outside the car.

The deceased were identified as Vicente Peña, Jason’s father, Antonio Fernández, Vicente’s brother, and Jorge Eduardo Vargas, a close family relative. Jason, who was shot in the back of the head, remains in a critical condition.

The beleaguered family has since arranged for Jason’s transfer to Texas to ensure he receives the urgent medical attention he requires. The details surrounding the ambush remain scarce, with local authorities continuing their investigation into the incident.

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges facing Mexico in its battle against violence and crime. As the family mourns their lost loved ones, they also anxiously await news of Jason’s recovery.
