Renowned Syrian Actor Bassar Al-Kousa Speaks Out After Eleven Days of Regime Fall
In the wake of Syria’s regime collapse, prominent actor Bassar Al-Kousa has broken his silence, sharing his stance and explaining his decision to remain in the country amidst calls from friends and family to leave.
The acclaimed "drama genius" of Syrian cinema, Al-Kousa, known for his vast portfolio of works, has previously been a vocal critic of corruption and cronyism, stepping forward since the onset of anti-regime protests in 2011.
In his first interview since the fall of the regime, Al-Kousa told Al Arabiya that he refused to leave Syria during these tumultuous years, despite persistent urging from his inner circle.
"Leaving Syria would be like living without a part of myself. I can only think of leaving if it means fragmentation, not freedom," Al-Kousa clarified.
The actor addressed criticisms that he supported the former regime, stating that while he isn’t a supporter nor a opponent, he mourns the lives lost on both sides.
"Every soldier deserves my respect. The tragedy here is ours, the Sryians’," he added, referencing his controversial statement about honoring soldiers by standing on their feet.
However, Al-Kousa’s comments have drawn criticism, with many accusing him of historical support for the old regime.
Reflecting on his statement, Al-Kousa affirmed that his stance hasn’t changed. He believes the current situation is loss for all Syrians.
Al-Kousa’s interview comes amidst the widespread criticism and debate surrounding the actor’s perceived alignment with the former regime. As Syria braces for a new era, the nation’s artists and cultural figures will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping narratives and conversation.
