US President Biden Declares Major Disaster for California, Deploying Federal Aid to Combat Wildfires
In response to the escalating wildfire crisis in California, President Biden has declared a major disaster, unlocking crucial funds and resources for affected communities to commence their recovery efforts. According to a White House statement, the Biden-Harris administration has maintained constant communication with Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and other local officials since the fires began. Additionally, the National Interagency Fire Center is in continuous contact with California’s Cal Fire, prepared to furnish any necessary resources, including personnel and fire suppression equipment.
Biden’s major disaster declaration enables affected communities and survivors to access immediate funds and resources to start their recovery process. Furthermore, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized financial assistance to help California cover firefighting costs. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell will travel to the affected area on Friday to assess damages and gauge the needs of the impacted community.
Given the evolving situation, the focus remains on mobilizing resources, equipment, and supplies. The federal government has provided five large-capacity airtankers from the U.S. Forest Service operating in southern California, along with 10 federal helicopters for fire suppression. The U.S. Forest Service has also prepositioned numerous fire engines ready for deployment as needed.
At Biden’s directive, the Department of Defense is swiftly providing additional firefighting personnel and resources. The federal government is collaborating closely with the National Guard, which has been deployed under Governor Newsom‘s emergency declaration. California National Guard is adding two Modular Aerial Firefighting System units, with Nevada National Guard preparing two more. Additionally, the Defense Department’s Northern Command is preparing four more, and the Department is sending 10 Marine Corps helicopters equipped with water buckets to assist in aerial suppression.
This swift and comprehensive response from the federal government underscores President Biden’s commitment to supporting California and its residents during this difficult time.
