Tragic Accident: 10-year-old Girl Dies After Getting Entangled in DIY Tree Hammock

A 10-year-old girl lost her life in a tragic accident while playing in a makeshift hammock hung from a tree in Villa Gobernador Gálvez, a locality south of Rosario, Argentina. The girl, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found entangled in the bedsheet hammock in the patio of her home on Pasaje Capuchino Street.

Her desperate mother discovered her and, along with other family members, rushed her to the Hospital Anselmo Gameni. Unfortunately, the girl suffered an asphyxiation-related cardiac arrest and did not survive. The incident occurred last Monday but was made public only after the autopsy results were made available on Wednesday.

The case is currently under investigation by the Homicide Division of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, with the current leading hypothesis pointing towards an unfortunate accident. The child was believed to have been playing outside while the rest of the family was still asleep.

This tragic event echoes a similar incident that occurred in October 2020 in Apóstoles, Misiones. A 12-year-old boy, Tomás Gonzalo Da Luz, lost his life after getting his neck caught in a hammock while playing with his siblings and a cousin at their home in the La Cantera neighborhood.

In another incident in June 2021, a 10-year-old girl fell to her death from a hammock in Villa Allende, Córdoba, after being thrown off while swinging. Despite the differing circumstances, these incidents serve as stark reminders of the potential hazards associated with hammocks and the importance of adult supervision during children’s playtime.

Our hearts go out to the families affected by these tragic events.
