Hamas Set to Free 34 Hostages; Israel Questions If They’re Alive
In a significant development, Hamas has reportedly agreed to release 34 hostages as part of a potential deal with Israel. However, Israel raised concerns about the well-being of these hostages, as Hamas has not provided any information on their current status. The list of these individuals was handed over by Hamas, with Israel confirming that it was not created by the militant group.
In a statements, Hamas announced its intention to release all 34 hostages in the initial stage of a prisoner swap deal. This group includes women, children, elderly, and sick individuals who were captured during the October 2023 conflict. According to Hamas, the release will be coordinated through mediatory channels.
Israel, on the other hand, has confirmed the release of 240 Palestinian detainees. Consequently, 96 prisoners remain in Israeli custody. Israel’s military has declared that 34 of these hostages have deceased. United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed optimism about a potential ceasefire, although he noted that the new U.S. administration would be crucial for its realization.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, an Israeli bus was targeted in a shooting attack in the West Bank, resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries. The assault occurred in the Palestinian village of Al-Funduk. Following the incident, the Israeli military launched a search operation for the assailants.
In the ongoing conflict that began in October 2023, the total death toll in Gaza has reached 45,805 individuals.
