Hezbollah launched an explosive drone near Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers north of the Beaufort Castle area on Friday, an incident that resulted in no casualties or damage. While Israeli media outlets reported the event, the IDF did not include the drone launch in its standard public updates, according to Ynet.
IDF Response to Media Inquiries Regarding Beaufort Castle Incident
Following inquiries from journalists, the IDF confirmed the details of the drone launch to Ynet. The military stated that its public information strategy is based on “factual considerations and situational assessments.” According to the official statement, the IDF spokesperson “will not publish information that, based on a situation assessment, could harm our forces operating in combat zones.” Ynet reported that the decision to withhold public disclosure of this specific incident was made by Rafi Milo, the chief of the IDF Northern Command.
Casualties and Combat Probe in Southern Lebanon
The drone incident occurred as the military conducts an internal probe into a separate, fatal explosion in southern Lebanon that took place on Wednesday. The IDF announced on Thursday that two soldiers were killed during a combat mission: Maj. (res.) Harel Birenstock, 34, of Efrat, and M.-Sgt. (res.) Tamir Vaknin, 33, of Eilat. Both men served in Battalion 2855 of the 55th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade.
Four other soldiers were wounded in the same incident. Rambam Medical Center reported on Thursday morning that the four injured soldiers were in serious condition, later noting on Thursday afternoon that one of the wounded had regained consciousness.
Military Escalation and Ceasefire Violations
The IDF characterized the explosion that killed the two reserve soldiers as a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire. In response, the military struck command centers and weapon storage sites throughout southern Lebanon and issued evacuation warnings for the town of Mansouri. These military actions follow reports from the Lebanese health ministry, which stated that an Israeli strike on the town of Tibnin—located approximately 25 kilometers from Mansouri—resulted in one death and 12 injuries on Wednesday.
