Mexico Prepares for Possible Mass Deportation of Mexicans from US, Says President Claudia Sheinbaum

Article:

Mexico’s government is gearing up for a possible mass deportation of Mexican citizens currently residing in the United States, following the announcement by President-elect Donald Trump. In her regular morning press conference on December 23, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo assured that the government is ready to receive and assist those who may be returned to Mexico.

Sheinbaum detailed that although she hopes mass deportations will not occur, the government, led by Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, is working alongside governors of the border states to ensure a smooth and humane reception. The plan includes providing immediate social programs, job opportunities, and communication assistance for the returning migrants.

Moreover, last week, Mexico’s Foreign Secretary, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Ambassador to the US Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, and ten Mexican consuls based in the central US held meetings to refine the protection plan for Mexican nationals, regardless of their immigration status.

The president expressed confidence that a mass deportation would not be necessary, hoping for a agreement between Mexico and the US. Sheinbaum also extends solidarity to migrants from other countries facing deportation, but mentioned that Mexico cannot commit to receiving them, insisting on the need for sufficient resources and dignified repatriation mechanisms for all affected migrants.

Previously, Trump promised to begin a massive deportation of undocumented immigrants starting January 20, 2025, following his election victory. Mexico has been preparing for this possibility while working towards a diplomatic solution.
