Oslo, Norway — In an ongoing effort to curb illegal drone activity, Norwegian police have arrested two foreign nationals for flying drones in a restricted zone in the heart of Oslo. The arrests took place on Monday evening, with police seizing the drones and launching an investigation.
Speaking to Nettavisen, police operations leader Rune Hekkelstrand confirmed the incident but declined to reveal the identities of the drone pilots at this stage. The two pilots have been taken into custody and will be interrogated about their reasons for violating the city’s drone-free regulations.
This incident is not an isolated event. According to Hekkelstrand, unauthorized drone flights are occurring almost daily in Oslo. The city’s drone ban, enforced since 2019, prohibits drone flying within a 102-meter radius of Oslo’s key landmark buildings, including the Parliament, the Royal Palace, and the Oslo Opera House.
The use of drones in Oslo’s restricted zones is a serious offense, punishable by fines or even imprisonment. The police reminded the public that drone flying is only allowed in designated areas outside of Oslo’s domain 102 (R102) zone.
As Oslo continues to grapple with the issue of illegal drone flying, police have warned that anyone caught violating the rules can expect severe penalties. Both locals and tourists are advised to familiarize themselves with Norway’s drone regulations to avoid potential legal trouble and ensure safety in the city.
