Throughout 2024, Indonesia has been at the epicenter of discussions surrounding a looming threat: megathrust earthquakes. The conversation intensified after a catastrophic 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Japanese island of Kyushu on August 8. This alarming event led Indonesian geophysicists to warn that two devastating megathrust earthquakes could be linger around the corner.
Kepala Pusat Gempa Bumi dan Tsunami, Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG), Daryono, cited the absence of significant seismic activity in two critical zones – the Sunda Strait and Mentawai-Siberut megathrust – as a cause for concern. These zones, which historically experience major earthquakes, have remained relatively quiet for over two centuries. Typically, such regions follow a seismic cycle that can last several hundred years.
However, despite the evident risk, BMKG emphasizes it cannot pinpoint an exact timeline for these impending earthquakes. In light of this uncertainty, Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of BMKG, appeals to the public to stay vigilant and prepare for the potential consequences of these megathrust events.
"Our intention is not to create fear, but to encourage mitigation efforts and raise awareness among communities," Dwikorita stated. "We’re reminding everyone that these aren’t new issues; they’ve been around for a long time. However, the focus now should be on taking proactive steps."
BMKG has initiated several precautionary measures to anticipate and mitigate the impacts of megathrust earthquakes:
- Strengthening Early Warning Systems: BMKG has positioned sensors along the megathrust zones, bolstering Indonesia’s Integrated Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS).
- Educating Local and International Communities: BMKG collaborates with local governments to establish evacuation routes, early warning systems, and tsunami shelters. Additionally, they partner with the Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Center to educate 25 coastal nations in the Indian Ocean region.
- Regular System Checks: BMKG ensures the proper functioning of early warning systems by conducting monthly checks on sirens donated to regional governments.
