New Italian Premier Meloni Meets Trump in Florida, Reaffirming Pro-American Stance
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has concluded her lightning visit to the United States with a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s Florida resort, further solidifying her pro-American stance. The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, was Meloni’s first face-to-face encounter with the former President since her Conservative party’s electoral victory in September.
During the meeting, Meloni expressed her admiration for Trump’s leadership and commended his administration’s work on various fronts. Trump, in turn, praised Meloni as a "terrific person" and a "very capable" leader, signaling his support for her government’s efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries.
Meloni’s visit to the US is part of her maiden international trip as Italy’s new premier. Her itinerary also included stops in Washington D.C., where she met with President Joe Biden at the White House, and New York City, where she addressed the United Nations General Assembly.
The Italian leader’s engagement with Trump is seen as a strategic move to garner support from the influential Republican segment in the US. Meloni’s Conservative party, Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), draws significant inspiration from Trump’s right-wing populist playbook.
"Italy and the United States share a long history of friendship and cooperation," Meloni said in a statement following the meeting. "I am committed to strengthening this bond and working together on issues of mutual concern, from promoting economic growth to defending our shared values and interests."
Trump’s endorsement of Meloni could potentially translate into significant political capital for the Italian premier, given the former President’s strong influence over the Republican Party. As Meloni settles into her role, her diplomatic overtures suggest a robust focus on transatlantic relations and a determination to assert Italy’s presence on the global stage.
In Trump’s characteristic style, he shared a photo of their encounter on his social media platform, Truth Social, accompanied by the caption, "Great to see Giorgia Meloni – she’s doing an incredible job in Italy!" Meloni, for her part, also shared a joint photograph on her official Twitter account, stating, "Honored to meet President Trump today. Together, we can promote peace, stability, and prosperity for our people and the world."
