Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that he has identified a “discreet, extremely well-funded” influence campaign by elements within the Israeli government aimed at derailing U.S.-led negotiations with Iran. Speaking on the Joe Rogan podcast, Vance stated he views this effort as an attempt to keep the regional military campaign going indefinitely, rather than pursuing a diplomatic settlement.
Allegations of Foreign Influence Campaigns
Vance pointed to a report published Tuesday in Time magazine as evidence of a coordinated effort to disrupt U.S. policy. According to Vance, the article details how former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale was linked to an Israeli-funded campaign that paid conservative influencers to publicly oppose a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. Vance characterized these influencers as attacking him “viciously” for his work on the administration’s negotiation objectives, which include preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and ensuring the free flow of oil and gas.
“I don’t even mind an effort to try to influence foreign governments to try to influence the United States all the time,” Vance said. “What bothers me is actually when American leadership allows that influence to affect their judgment.”
Defense Against Antisemitism Accusations
During the interview, the vice president addressed claims that his stance toward Israel and his foreign policy choices reflect antisemitic or anti-Zionist views. Vance rejected these allegations, calling them “insane” and asserting that he has “a ton of respect for the Jewish religion.” He positioned himself as a “reasonable moderate” within the U.S. debate on Israel, stating that he views Israel as an ally comparable to France or the U.K.—a nation with which the U.S. will have both agreements and diverging interests.
Concerns Over Espionage and Policy Shifts
The discussion with Rogan touched on the broader question of how foreign nations, specifically Israel, operate within the U.S. political system. While Rogan raised concerns regarding potential Israeli espionage against American politicians and the influence of foreign funding, Vance noted that while Israel is “more effective at it than most,” it is not the only country attempting to manipulate American public opinion to achieve desired outcomes.
Vance clarified that he maintains positive relationships with some members of the Israeli government, specifically citing the Israeli ambassador to the United States as a “really good guy.” However, he maintained that there are specific elements within the Israeli system actively working to shift U.S. policy away from a settlement. He also dismissed reports that the U.S. is providing $300 billion to Iran, characterizing those claims as a misunderstanding of the lifting of sanctions that allow Gulf States to resume trade.
