India Unveils Ambitious Space Program Aiming to Land an Indian Astronaut on the Moon by 2040
In a bold stride towards lunar exploration, India has unveiled an ambitious space program targeting the moon by 2040. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chairman, Sridhara Somanath, recently disclosed this vision, marking a new era for India’s space agency.
"By the time we celebrate 100 years of independence, the Indian flag will be hoisted on the moon," Somanath asserted, envisioning an Indian astronaut performing this historic task and returning safely to Earth. The year 2040 is penciled in for this monumental feat.
This marks the first occasion in ISRO’s history where a 25-year roadmap has been outlined, setting ambitious milestones for the space agency. According to the details, India intentioned to construct its own space station within the next decade, preceded by the launch of a station module in 2028, paving the way for full operational deployment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously tasked ISRO with developing India’s first human-rated space station by 2035 and achieving a lunar landing by 2040. Furthermore, ambitious plans include sending a spacecraft to orbit Venus and developing a Mars lander, widening India’s cosmic horizons.
As India’s space aspirations soar, the world watches with anticipation, eager to witness the unfurling of the ‘Tricolor’ on the lunar surface.
