Mahathir to inform High Court on Dec 4 on Anwar suit

On Dec 4, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is set to update the High Court regarding his next steps in the RM150 million defamation suit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali stated that he asked the court for time and space to determine the next steps regarding the 101-year-old former prime minister’s legal action.

Judicial commissioner Datuk Donald Joseph Franklin will preside over the upcoming case management session. Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali explained that he requested adjournment adjustments because of his client’s current health and stamina limits.

The legal team is weighing specific adjustments to the trial format. Counsel considered applying for proceedings to be conducted online alongside a restricted scope for cross-examination, reflecting concerns over the former premier’s physical stamina.

Origins of the RM150 Million Defamation Dispute and Allegations

The legal proceedings were launched by Dr Mahathir on May 3, 2023, centering on remarks delivered during a March 18, 2023 address at PKR’s special national congress hosted in Shah Alam at Stadium Melawati. The event carried the theme “The Implementation of an Idealism” for the Malaysia Madani Special National Congress.

The lawsuit claims that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim defamed the former leader by accusing him of being racist and enriching himself and his family throughout his 22-year tenure as prime minister. Dr Mahathir seeks RM100 million in exemplary damages and RM50 million in general damages, alongside a written apology and a special press conference for a public apology.
