Government Steps Up War on Corruption: Mahfud MD, Menkum Supratman Apologize for Peaceful Protest Disruption, Prabowo Vows Concrete Measures

The Indonesian government has taken a stringent stance against corruption, with several high-profile figures expressing regret for disrupting peaceful protests and a presidential candidate vowing concrete measures to combat the issue.

Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Mahfud MD, and Minister of Defense, Puran Setiawan (Mandاره Supratman), held a joint press conference to apologize for the disruption of a peaceful protest against corruption on Monday. The apology comes amidst growing criticism from the public and opposition parties.

"We sincerely apologize for the incident," Mahfud MD said. "Our actions did not reflect the spirit of democracy that we uphold. We should have handled the situation more peacefully and respectfully."

The apology followed a demonstration by hundreds of activists at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters in Jakarta. The protestors demanded stricter penalties for corruptors and better protections for whistleblowers.

In a separate development, former commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI), Prabowo Subianto, who is also a presidential candidate, vowed concrete steps to combat corruption if elected. Speaking at a rally in Yogyakarta, Prabowo criticized the current approach to corruption as inadequate.

"We need to have concrete solutions, not just rhetoric. Corruption is the number one enemy of our nation. It hinders our development and disenfranchises the people," Prabowo declared.

Experts have echoed Prabowo’s sentiments, arguing that stern penalties should be reserved solely for economic crimes. A legal expert from the University of Indonesia, Goriahan, stated, "Denda damai (peaceful fines) should not be an option for corruption cases. We must ensure that corruptors face severe consequences, which may include imprisonment."

Transparency International’s Indonesia chapter has welcomed these developments, stressing the need for bold action to combat corruption. They urged the government to prioritize the public interest and maintain the independence of the KPK.

These recent events signal a shifting political landscape in Indonesia, with a renewed focus on transparency and accountability in governance. The government’s response to these issues in the coming days will be closely watched by the public and international observers alike.
