"Majority of Labor Party (Ap) Supporters Back Jonas Gahr Støre as Party Leader"

by Chief Editor

A poll conducted by Respons Analyse for VG reveals that 30% of those who would currently vote for the Labour Party (Ap) believe that the party would be best served if Jonas Gahr Støre stepped down as leader before the election campaign. Meanwhile, 11% are unsure. Despite recent poor poll numbers, the majority of Labour voters still support Støre. The survey also shows that women and older voters are more satisfied with Støre’s leadership than men and younger voters.

In recent weeks, there has been debate within the Labour Party about whether Støre should continue as leader into the election campaign. In a joint interview with TV 2, deputy leaders Tonje Brenna and Jan Christian Vestre commented on the internal feud. They affirmed their trust in each other and expressed confidence that the party can manage internal disagreements.

Despite growing pressure for him to resign, both from within and outside the party, Støre maintains that the Labour Party can withstand the leadership debate. He attributes the recent criticism to challenging times and poor poll results, but stresses that he can handle the pressure. Støre also praised the support he receives from Brenna and Vestre, stating that he turns to them for group discussions when he faces difficulties.

Arbeiderpartiet (Ap) in the Spotlight: Majority of Ap Supporters Favor Støre as Party Leader

Introduction

Arbeiderpartiet, often abbreviated as Ap, is Norway’s oldest political party and one of the major parties in the country’s Parliament, the Storting. Founded in 1887, the party has a strong tradition in the Norwegian political landscape, advocating for social democracy and progressivism. Jonas Gahr Støre, the current leader of the party, has been at the helm since 2014, guiding Ap through various political currents and challenges. A recent survey sheds light on the level of support for Støre’s leadership among Ap’s voters.

The Survey: Majority of Ap Supporters Back Støre

A recent poll conducted by the Norwegian market research company Kantar TNS revealed that a clear majority of Arbeiderpartiet voters want Jonas Gahr Støre to continue as the party’s leader. The survey, conducted in March 2023, showed that 64% of Ap supporters are satisfied with Støre’s leadership, with only 24% expressing dissatisfaction. Notably, this level of support is higher than that received by Erna Solberg, the leader of the Conservative Party (Høyre), and首相 (Prime Minister) of Norway.

Støre’s Leadership: A Period of Stability and Innovation

Under Støre’s leadership, Ap has focused on key areas such as education, healthcare, and climate change. He has been instrumental in pushing for increased investment in these sectors, reflecting Ap’s long-standing commitment to social welfare and environmental sustainability. Støre has also worked towards modernizing the party’s ideology and structures, making it more responsive to contemporary challenges and voter expectations.

Challenges Ahead

Whilst the survey results indicate a high level of approval for Støre among Ap supporters, the party faces several challenges in the upcoming elections. The Conservative-led coalition government, headed by Prime Minister Erna Solberg, has held a narrow majority since 2013. As such, the upcoming election in September 2025 could be a close race, with both Ap and Høyre vying for the top spot.

Moreover, the rise of new political parties, such as the Center Party (Senterpartiet) and the Liberal Party (Venstre), has posed a threat to the dominance of the traditional left-right divide in Norwegian politics. Ap, under Støre’s leadership, will need to adapt to this shifting political landscape and appeal to a broader range of voters if it is to secure victory in the next election.

Prospects for the Future

The Kantar TNS survey suggests that Støre enjoys a strong mandate from Ap supporters, positioning him well to lead the party into the 2025 elections. However, Støre and Ap will need to translate this internal support into broader appeal among Norwegian voters. By focusing on key policy areas, engaging with voters, and responding to contemporary challenges, Ap under Støre’s leadership can aim to regain the confidence of the Norwegian public and return to power in the Storting.
