Chaotic New Year’s Eve Attack in Italy: Egyptian Refugee Killed After Stabbing Multiple People
Villa Verucchio, Italy – A 23-year-old Egyptian national used a 22-centimeter knife to attack and injure four individuals on New Year’s Eve, sparking panic in the small town near Rimini. The man, who had been granted refugee status after entering Italy in 2022, was shot dead by a carabinieri officer after a violent struggle.
The incident occurred around 22:15 local time when the Egyptian man first stabbed an 18-year-old at a cigarette vending machine. He fled the scene, only to return about 45 minutes later, where he attacked two more people: a 20-year-old man and a couple aged 60. The husband was severely injured and required surgery, but all four victims are now stable.
At approximately 23:30, a carabinieri patrol – led by Commander Luciano Masini – intercepted the suspect. Despite repeated warnings, the Egyptian man failed to surrender, forcing Masini to open fire. After 11 warning shots, Masini fired the fatal round, killing the suspect.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had been living in a cooperative-run apartment in Villa Verucchio and was receiving a stipend while awaiting employment. No known mental health issues or criminal record were found. Prosecutors are analyzing a video recording of the encounter, including the suspect’s alleged Arabic statements, which may provide further insight into the motive.
Commander Masini is being investigated under the initial hypothesis of "excessive self-defense," but authorities stress this is merely a procedural requirement. A defense lawyer and an appointed expert will assist him during the autopsy process.
"This tragic event underscores the importance of rigorous vetting procedures and Figlia di associate staff integral support for refugees seeking a better life in new societies," said a spokesperson from the Italian Ministry of Interior.
