Carrington Talks and the Decision to Delay
Club executives, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, gathered at the Carrington training ground to assess the immediate future following a turbulent run of results. According to a senior figure at United, calmness and a clear head were required rather than a reactionary dismissal directly after the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth. That loss left the club 16th in the Premier League table and extended their winless streak to eight games in all competitions.
The Guardian noted that Carrick had already been under scrutiny following a 4-1 defeat in the Champions League on October 21 against Como, which was described by respected United fan and United We Stand fanzine editor Andy Mitten as an affront to the name of Manchester United
. The Guardian further reported that Michael Carrick’s eventual dismissal will occur when Manchester United agree a deal with his replacement. Carrick had headed to Carrington shortly before 2pm on Monday, spending around three hours at the complex before departing shortly after 5pm as Wilcox also left. Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family were also part of those discussions.
Players and former striker criticize team performance
Internal friction has added to the pressure at Old Trafford. Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned Carrick’s tactics and the coaching staff’s failure to identify tactical issues during matches. This followed comments from defender Lisandro Martinez, who pointedly called for greater squad investment and more accountability from technical director Jason Wilcox.

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney offered a harsh assessment of the current dressing room culture on the Stick to United podcast. Rooney stated that the players needed a firework up their arses
and questioned whether the current squad possesses the right mentality or quality to lift the club back to elite standards. Fernandes was dropped to the bench for the Bournemouth fixture and later interacted with social media posts highlighting player loyalty. Rooney remarked, The players haven’t got a leg to stand on. What’s not fair is the performances they are giving,
and added, What type of performances do you think this is? Do you think you deserve to wear the shirt? Put a ******* firework up their arses because they are not doing anything. We are seeing players who are numb, look like they have got no emotion, look like they don’t care. Some of them might care, some good lads who are getting dragged down.
Rooney also questioned recruitment, stating, They wanted Premier League players, they have brought lads from Wolves, Brentford, who have done well, but for signings to take this Manchester United team to the next level, you are living in cuckoo land if you think they are going to achieve that.
Rooney added, The squad is absolutely a million miles away. The worst thing for Michael Carrick, he has given the board a bit of hope when in reality, they needed a big overhaul and have done for years. The midfield, spending that amount on those midfielders, is absolutely crazy. I feel for Michael, he has being let down, he hasn’t been good enough, but the players have let him down massively.
Following the match, Fernandes liked an Instagram post which included the caption: Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care
.
Historical Parallels at Old Trafford
The current instability evokes memories of previous managerial crises in the club’s modern history. The Guardian highlighted that Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson represent the rare exceptions in a century of management at Old Trafford, where departures have frequently arrived amid severe domestic or European regression. Previous managers such as Frank O’Farrell saw their tenures ended following heavy defeats, accelerated by a December 1972 meeting at Selhurst Park where Crystal Palace beat United 5-0 under Tommy Docherty.
