Discord Opens Public Server Chats to Google Search
“Prior to Discord’s launch, message boards were common, ranging from community-driven forums to official ones run by game studios,” Discord said in a blog post outlining a major shift that will soon allow search engines to index years of gaming guides, technical troubleshooting, and niche discussions.
Discoverable Servers get web pages starting Nov. 16
The rollout happens in two distinct stages. Starting Nov. 16, 2026, every so-called Discoverable Server gets its own web page, complete with a description and automated summaries of activity in active public channels.
The change applies exclusively to Discoverable Servers, which are public communities listed in Discord’s server directory that anyone can join without an invitation. To qualify for the directory, a server must have at least 1,000 members and be at least eight weeks old. Discord states that more than 63,000 servers currently meet that threshold, covering topics from game strategies and fandoms to language learning and cryptocurrency trading. Private servers, direct messages, and group direct messages remain entirely excluded from the program.
Administrative Controls and User Privacy Settings
Discord began rolling out administrative controls on Oct. 27, 2026, for desktop and web users, giving communities time to review their settings before publishing begins. Server Settings > Web Presence lets admins choose channels or opt out entirely, according to Discord’s announcement. Administrators can also remove specific AI-generated summaries without excluding an entire channel. Disabling a feature stops new content from being added, but material already published may stay visible unless the server’s web page is removed entirely by turning off Discoverability.
Individual members can opt out through User Settings > Data & Privacy by switching off the message content toggle. This setting applies across every Discoverable Server a user belongs to and covers posts sent from mobile devices as well. Whether a message becomes public is determined by the setting in place when it was sent; posts made while sharing was enabled can still surface later even if the user opts out afterward.

Regional laws dictate default message sharing settings
Default settings vary significantly by region due to legal restrictions. Sharing is switched on by default in most markets, including Japan, but off in the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. Users in those regions must manually opt in before their messages can appear on the web, and accounts classified as teens cannot enable message sharing in any region until they reach adulthood.
Critics question whether posting in a public server amounts to informed consent for global indexing. For cryptocurrency and finance groups, which use public servers for technical support and project updates, the update cuts both ways: answers become easier to find, but support threads may lose context once read outside their original conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions About Discord Web Indexing
Which messages are eligible for search engine indexing?
Only messages sent after the feature goes live in mid-December 2026 in participating Discoverable Server channels are eligible for indexing. Earlier posts are entirely excluded from the program.
If you've ever searched for a specific speedrun trick, someone has likely already answered it in a channel somewhere, in one of 63,000 Discoverable Servers. We’re updating Discoverable Servers to make those answers easier to find. https://t.co/kYowgybmZj
Do user names and avatars appear in search results?
Usernames and avatars are not displayed alongside messages on the new web pages, and posts published there link back to the original conversations inside Discord.
How can users remove a message that has already been indexed?
Users must delete the original post inside Discord. Search engines may retain cached copies for a period, occasionally requiring a separate removal request.

What are the minimum requirements for a server to be included?
To qualify as a Discoverable Server, a community must be listed in Discord’s server directory, have at least 1,000 members, and be at least eight weeks old.
Can server administrators choose to hide only specific channels?
Yes. Through Server Settings > Web Presence, administrators can select which individual public channels participate in web indexing or disable web exposure for the entire server.
