Breaking News: Bertha Alcalde Luján Appointed as New Attorney General of Mexico City
In a unanimous vote, the local Congress approved the appointment of Bertha Alcalde Luján as the new Attorney General of Mexico City, set to assume office on January 10, 2025. The vote was opposed only by the PAN party, while the ruling party’s majority approved the nomination.
Alcalde Luján, who served as the director of the ISSSTE from February to September, was chosen from a list of three candidates. Alberto Martínez Urincho, president of the Administration and Justice Prosecution Commission, highlighted the role of the Ciudadano Council in creating the shortlist and praised Alcalde Luján’s outstanding performance during interviews.
During her tenure as the director of ISSSTE and the federal programs for development in Chihuahua, Alcalde Luján demonstrated her ability to lead complex institutions. Prior to these roles, she held various positions in the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, including the directorship of the General Legal Support Unit and the Secretariat of the National Security System.
Despite not succeeding in her bid for the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) and the presidency of the National Institute of Elections (INE), Alcalde Luján’s extensive experience and dedication to public service have earned her the confidence of the legislative body.
Upon her victory, Ulrich Richter Morales, a penal lawyer and master of criminal sciences, congratulated the Congress of Mexico City on their decision and wished the new attorney general success in her upcoming role.
