In a significant blow to drug trafficking operations, Mexican authorities have discovered and dismantled a vast clandestine laboratory in the northern state of Sinaloa. The lab, covering an estimated 7,500 square meters, was unearthed during aerial patrols conducted by a joint task force comprising the Mexican Navy (Semar), the Mexican Army, and the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
Details emerged in a statement issued by the Mexican Navy, which highlighted the seizure of approximately 200 kilograms of what is believed to be the final product, along with nearly 700 liters of substances suspected to be in the cooking process. Additionally, authorities confiscated over 3,650 liters and 209 kilograms of precursor chemicals.
The laboratory was equipped with advanced technology, including three stainless steel reactors, distillers, centrifuges, tanks, and various other equipment presumed to be used in the production of synthetic drugs. Items such as ventilators, metal pans, large containers, and acid-resistant gloves were also recovered from the site.
Although the specific type of drug manufactured at the lab has not been confirmed, preliminary investigations suggest a possible connection to the criminal cell aligned with Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada and currently led by his nephew, Ismael Zambada Sicairos, alias ‘Mayito Flaco’.
Authorities, acting with the FGR’s approval, destroyed the lab and its contents to prevent further use in drug manufacturing. No arrests have been reported in connection with this lab at the time of this publication.
In a related development, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo recently addressed concerns about fentanyl production in the country during her morning press conference on January 7. While acknowledging ongoing investigations into this matter, she stated that no laboratories dedicated to the entire production process of fentanyl have been discovered thus far. Previous seizures have primarily targeted facilities involved in the production of counterfeit pills, representing only one stage of the fentanyl supply chain.
