Mexican Secretariats of Women and Science, Technology, and Innovation Inaugurated

The Secretariats of Women (Mujeres) and Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (Secihti) were inaugurated on January 1, 2025, under the leadership of Citlalli Hernández and Rosaura Ruiz, who will serve as the heads of these departments during Claudia Sheinbaum’s government.

The Secretariat of Women: A Milestone for Gender Equality

The Secretariat of Women, which aims to promote gender equality and prevent violence against women, was inaugurated on January 1, 2025. This new institution is committed to formulating and monitoring public policies with a gender focus, considering the intersectionality and human rights aspects. Its mission is to guarantee equality, a life free of violence, and access to care across the public sectors and authorities.

Citlalli Hernández: The Face Behind Mexico’s Women Secretariat

Citlalli Hernández, the newly appointed Secretary of Women, is a prominent figure in Mexican politics. She graduated with a degree in Communication and a specialty in Journalism from the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Her political career has been marked by her youth and activism, being elected as the youngest local deputy in 2015 and later as a senator of the Republic in 2018.

Hernández is a Morena party militant and has been involved in various social movements, including the Yo Soy 132 movement in 2012. She is also the founder of the International Feminist movement. As a legislator, she has focused on defending human rights, gender equality, and promoting citizen and women’s organizations.

Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez: Mexico’s Secretary of Science, Technology, and Innovation

Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, a biologist and academic from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), will lead the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation. With a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, she has an extensive academic career, including serving as the director of the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM from 2010 to 2017.

The Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation aims to strengthen the national sector policy and coordinate with the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) to enhance higher education. The new secretariat will contribute to making Mexico a scientifically and technologically advanced country, aligning with President Sheinbaum’s vision to include science and technology as central components of her government’s social project.
