Emergency crews evacuated multiple buildings and closed streets in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday after construction workers at 235 East 42nd Street reported structural support beams buckling on the 21st and 22nd floors. No injuries were reported, though fire officials ordered evacuations for neighboring properties as a precaution.

The incident began shortly before 8 a.m. when construction workers on-site at 235 East 42nd Street noticed significant structural instability. According to the New York City Police Department, the workers observed a beam beginning to sag, which prompted an immediate self-evacuation of all personnel working on the project.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) confirmed that the 38-story structure, which is currently undergoing a conversion from office space to residential apartments, showed signs of distress between the 21st and 26th floors. Fire officials reported that two columns on the 21st and 22nd floors had buckled, leading to reports of falling bricks from the building’s facade.

Evacuations and Traffic Impacts

In response to the structural concerns, the FDNY deployed 21 units and 79 personnel to the scene. Authorities implemented a wide security perimeter to protect the public. The WABC-TV reports that East 42nd Street was closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic between Second and Third Avenues.

The safety measures extended to neighboring properties. The FDNY ordered the evacuation of buildings at 225 East 43rd Street and 231 East 42nd Street—the latter being the Hampton Inn Manhattan Grand Central—to ensure the safety of guests and residents. Officials also requested the closure of East 44th Street between Second and Third Avenues as they continued their assessment of the site.

Building History and Redevelopment Context

The site at 235 East 42nd Street holds significant history in Midtown Manhattan. For decades, it served as the world headquarters for Pfizer and housed various other entities, including the Alexander Hamilton Institute and the Taiwanese mission to the United Nations.

Building History and Redevelopment Context

The building’s architectural legacy is a composite of different eras. The primary structure was built in 1960 in the international style by the design firm Emery Roth & Sons, according to Newsday. This main tower was integrated with an original 10-story building from 1905 located at 219 East 42nd Street. The current redevelopment project, which began in 2024, aims to transform the former office complex into approximately 1,500 apartments.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation

The situation remains fluid as inspectors evaluate the extent of the damage to the building’s steel frame. While early reports focused on the falling bricks, the primary concern for city officials is the potential for further structural compromise.

“The FDNY said it had reports of floors sagging between the 21st and 26th floors and determined two columns of the 21st and 22nd floors had buckled,” reported Newsday.

Investigators from the Department of Buildings are assessing whether the steel beams were compromised during the ongoing conversion process. Traffic disruptions in the Midtown East area are expected to continue until officials declare the area safe for public access.

The Department of Buildings is conducting a structural audit of the tower.
