Minister Batres Demands Immediate Removal of Committee Members for Unilateral Suspension of Judicial Election Process
mexico city, Mexico — Minister Lenia Batres Guadarrama is set to request the immediate dismissal of all five members of the-power Judicial Committee (PJF) during the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation‘s (SCJN) upcoming session. This decision comes after the committee suspended the selection process for the upcoming June 1st judicial election without consulting the ministers.
Batres, in a press statement, stated that the committee has overstepped its bounds, stating that their role is purely technical and auxiliary, with no authority to make unilateral decisions. She argued that the committee’s actions lack a legal basis as their functions are limited to technical, internal, and administrative matters.
The ministers in question—Mónica González Contró, Emma Meza Fonseca, María Emilia Molina de la Puente, Luis Enrique Pereda Trejo, and Wilfrido Castañón León—were accused of suspending the process without first informing the ministers.
Batres also pointed out that the committee cannot impose decisions unilaterally as it is the SCJN’s responsibility to propose candidates. Moreover, she argued that granting a suspension is inappropriate when the law clearly states that an amparo lawsuit against SCJN acts is not valid.
In the upcoming private session of the Pleno on Thursday, where Minister President Norma Piña Hernández will inform the ministers about the suspension of the candidate selection process, Batres will present her petition to dismiss the committee members.
