Migrant Deaths in Strandja: Bulgarian Minister Reveals Cause, Denies Police Brutality
In an alarming turn of events, Bulgaria‘s Interior Minister, Boyko Rashkov, has shed light on the recent deaths of migrants in the Strandja region. Over the past week, five migrants have lost their lives, sparking concern and outrage.
Minister Rashkov attributed these tragedies to the consumption of high-energy drinks, a coping mechanism used by migrants to endure the grueling journey. "The toxic combination of these drinks with the hot weather and physical exhaustion has proven fatal," he explained.
Rashkov promptly dismissed rumors of police brutality, stating, "We have no evidence or reports indicating that our border police have used violence against migrants." He emphasized that the police are strictly adhering to international protocols and human rights standards.
During a visit to Pловdiv, Minister Rashkov addressed speculations about violence against migrants by border police. He dismissed these claims as "low-level speculation," reiterating that there’s no evidence to support such allegations.
These revelations come amidst growing concern over the treatment of migrants in Bulgaria. Human rights organizations have previously raised alarms about pushbacks and inhuman treatment at the border. Minister Rashkov, however, maintains that Bulgaria is committed to respecting human rights and international law.
As the situation unfolds, it’s crucial to differentiate between facts and speculations. While the cause of the migrants’ deaths appears to be dietary, the broader issue of migrant treatment in Bulgaria remains a contentious topic requiring ongoing scrutiny and dialogue.
