St. Charles Health System Invests in Future Healthcare Workers with New Medical Assistant Program
St. Charles Health System is proactively addressing a critical healthcare need in Central Oregon by offering full funding and stipends for individuals pursuing Medical Assistant (MA) certification at Central Oregon Community College (COCC). This initiative comes as the health system anticipates hiring up to 70 medical assistants in the next year, making it the most in-demand position within the organization.
Addressing the Growing Demand for Medical Assistants
The healthcare industry is facing a nationwide shortage of skilled professionals, and medical assistants are proving to be a vital link in patient care. St. Charles currently employs approximately 250 MAs, primarily in outpatient clinics, and currently has around 50 vacancies. The new program aims to fill these gaps and ensure continued high-quality care for the community.
“We are excited to offer this new funding in hopes of getting more people interested in becoming medical assistants, which is an engaging but often overlooked health care job,” said Jennifer Brooks, Chief Nursing Officer for Ambulatory Care at St. Charles. Brooks, a former MA herself, emphasizes the fulfilling nature of the role.
Program Details and Opportunities
The program offers two tracks: an accelerated six-month program starting in June, and the traditional nine-month program beginning in September. Ten students will be accepted into the accelerated track, with an additional 20 spots available in the standard program. Successful applicants will have their tuition fully covered and receive a stipend to assist with living expenses during their studies.
In exchange for the financial support, graduates commit to working at St. Charles Health System for a minimum of two years. This commitment ensures a stable workforce for the health system and provides newly certified MAs with valuable experience and career opportunities.
What Does a Medical Assistant Do?
Medical assistants play a crucial role in the clinical setting, often being the first point of contact for patients. Their responsibilities are diverse, including supporting providers, preparing patients for examinations, maintaining medical equipment, and addressing patient inquiries. Certified MAs are also qualified to perform tasks such as EKGs and blood draws.
“Becoming a medical assistant is a great first step into the profession of health care,” notes Kaylyn Grammater, clinical educator for Ambulatory Care at St. Charles. “Many MAs go on to become nurses, doctors, physical therapists and other types of health care professionals. They are like the glue that keeps our outpatient clinics together.”
New Pre-Certified MA Position
St. Charles is also introducing a new “Pre-Certified Medical Assistant” position. This allows individuals to begin working as a medical assistant while simultaneously pursuing their certification, with a slightly limited scope of practice. This provides an alternative pathway for those eager to enter the field quickly.
COCC’s Role in Training the Next Generation
Central Oregon Community College’s Medical Assisting program is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a clinical setting. “Our Medical Assisting program at COCC blends hands-on clinical training with strong classroom instruction so students graduate confident and job ready,” said Shannon Waller, medical assisting program director for COCC. “This funding opportunity helps remove financial barriers and opens the door for more students to step into meaningful health care careers.”
