NEW YORK — In an unusual turn of events, the grand New Year’s Fire usanswere lit a day early in several Dutch cities due to predicted strong winds on Tuesday, the eve of 2023.
In Scheveningen, the coastal town known for its vibrant New Year’s celebration, the Fire usanwas set ablaze as early as Monday evening. Local officials decided to proceed with the tradition ahead of schedule, citing concerns over the safety and stability of the structures in high winds.

Other cities, including Delft and The Hague, followed suit, igniting their Fire usans earlier than planned. Delft’s Fire usan, typically lit on New Year’s Eve, was set alight on Monday, while The Hagueajuferred to the same safety concerns as Scheveningen.
The change in plans was not without controversy. Some residents expressed disappointment at missing the traditional New Year’s Eve lighting, while others appreciated the extra day to enjoy the winter attraction.
"We came early to see it and it’s amazing," said one visitor in Scheveningen. "But I’ll miss the New Year’s Eve atmosphere."
