Title: First North Korean Soldier Dies in Ukraine War; Seoul Reports High Casualties

In a significant turn of events, the first North Korean soldier has died due to a deterioration of his condition, according to Yonhap and DPA news agencies. The soldier was captured on the front line in Kursk Oblast, Russia, as reported by South Korean intelligence, citing a "friendly nation’s intelligence service."

An image purported to be of the captured North Korean soldier is circulating on Telegram, BTA News Agency reports. The soldier’s death marks a grim milestone in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with North Korea reportedly deploying over 10,000 troops to aid Russian operations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced earlier this week that North Korean forces have suffered over 3,000 casualties, with South Korea reporting 1,100 killed or injured by Monday. White House National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby confirmed that North Korean forces have been used in mass attacks against Ukrainian positions in Kursk Oblast, although these "human wave" tactics have proven ineffective, he said.

"These North Korean troops appeared to be viewed as expendable by the Russian and North Korean high commands," Kirby stated. "More than a thousand killed or injured in just seven or eight days." He also noted reports of North Korean soldiers committing suicide rather than surrendering to Ukrainian forces, likely out of fear of reprisals against their families back home.

The presence of foreign troops on Russian soil is seen as a "sign of despair" for Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

As the war in Ukraine continues to unfold, the involvement and losses of North Korean troops add a new dimension to the conflict. The international community watches with concern as Putin’s apparent desperation drives him to deploy allied troops in large numbers, seemingly without regard for their lives.
