Title: Storm Creates Havoc, Heavy Rain Expected in Northern Norway

Article:

The storm that battered Troms and Finnmark over the 1st and 2nd of Christmas is now giving way to heavy rain, which is forecast to continue throughout the day. The rain, accompanied by mild temperatures, is expected to bring significant potential risks.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET) has issued two yellow alerts: one for flooding and another for landslides and snow avalanches. From Thursday evening to Friday evening, large amounts of rain are expected, ranging from 50 to 80 mm in 24 hours in certain areas.

Potential Impact on Traffic

MET warns that water levels in streams and rivers will rise, leading to possible local flooding and erosion damage. Snowmelt, reduced soil infiltration capacity due to frozen ground, and increased water levels in waterways could exacerbate flooding risks.

Landslides and snow avalanches are also possible, which could block roads. Several regions in Nordland, Troms, and Finnmark face significant snow avalanche risks, with additional alerts expected.

Meteorologist’s Outlook

Vakthavande meteorolog (On-duty meteorologist) at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute North Norway, Sevim Müller, confirms the wet outlook. She expects up to 80 mm of rain in parts of Sør-Troms and the Ofoten region on Friday, with heavy rain expected on the 2nd of Christmas as well.

"The low-pressure system is active, with asouth-west airflow pushing towards mainland Norway. This will bring significant rain to parts of the country," Müller explains.
