Unemployment in Bulgaria Drops to 3.0% as Job Market Shows Signs of Recovery
Bulgaria’s unemployment rate has decreased to 3.0% by the end of the year, according to data from the Employment Agency. A total of 10,200 officially unemployed individuals were recorded in late November.
The overall unemployment level is low, although there are still ‘hotspots’ across Bulgaria where jobless rates are prevalence. Leading the chart is Dimovo municipality, near Vidin, with a staggering 66% unemployment rate. Coming in second and third are Kaynardzha municipality, near Silistra (43%), and Makresh, also near Vidin (43%).
A Struggling Job Seeker
Michaela, a 12-year veteran in culinary and bakery work, is currently among those seeking employment. She shared her experiences with our reporter, “You can’t make ends meet on 930 levs from the minimum wage, and receiving 500-600 levs in unemployment benefits certainly doesn’t help. After 12 years of service, I receive only about 500 levs a month."
Unemployment Benefits: A Double-Edged Sword
The average unemployment benefit in Bulgaria stands at 715 levs, almost on par with what minimum wage earners receive. Residents in Sofia receive the highest benefits, averaging slightly over 957 levs per month, whereas those in Vratsa receive the least, around 586 levs. Minimum daily benefits range from 18 levs to 107.14 levs, which remain unchanged year-round despite increases in the minimum wage.
Finding Work After Unemployment
According to data from the National Statistical Institute, 35.2% of job seekers manage to find employment within 5 months of becoming unemployed. Despite these positive signs, there’s still much work to be done to ensure a fair and balanced job market across all regions of Bulgaria.
