Gabrovo, Bulgaria – A widespread power outage inGabrovo has left thousands of residents and tourists in the dark, with over 70 settlements still affected, as of December 28, 2024. The region has been grappling with the outage since Christmas Day, leading frustrated citizens to launch a petition calling for the revocation of electricity distributor "Energo-Pro"’s license.

The outage has not only left residents without power but also disrupted essential services. In the architectural reserve of Bozhentsi, tourists have been forced to leave their accommodations due to the ongoing power cut, according toените a statement by Krastina Kostadinova, the mayor’s proxy.

"People are understandably upset, especially since this is happening during the winter holidays," Kostadinova said. "Many properties rely on pumps for water supply, which cannot function without electricity. Additionally, access to some villages has been challenging due to transportation disruptions."

The power outage has also affected the delivery of food supplies and communication in remote areas. The constant sound of trees falling in the forest due to heavy snow and strong winds is adding to the locals’ worries, as reported by Kostadinova.

Maria Yosova, deputy mayor of Gabrovo Municipality, called on "Energo-Pro" to provide an update on the situation and a timeline for restoration. She also revealed that while 40 settlements have one phase of electricity restored, the low voltage power supply remains cut off.

Social media users have started a petition urging the withdrawal of "Energo-Pro"’s license, as the company has left thousands in the dark and cold since December 25. Hotel and guest house owners, affected by the outage, are expected to claim significant compensations.

In nearby Veliko Tarnovo, a similar outage has affected dozens of settlements, leaving them without power and water. As of now, there is no estimated time for full restoration of electricity in the affected areas.
