Pakistan‘s Airstrike in Afghanistan Kills at Least 46 Civilians, Taliban Claims
Kabul – A Pakistani airstrike targeted the eastern border region of Afghanistan, with Islamabad officials claiming to have hit "terrorist hideouts." The Taliban government, which controls Afghanistan, reported that at least 46 civilians, including many children and women, were killed in the attack.
This incident is the latest in the ongoing border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which have escalated since the Taliban took power in 2021.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that Pakistani military forces bombed four areas in the Barmal district of Paktika province on Tuesday, local time. "The total death toll is 46, mostly children and women," Mujahid said, adding that six others, mostly children, were injured.
Pakistan has not yet issued an official response from its Foreign Ministry or military. However, a senior Pakistani security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strike targeted "terrorist hideouts" using jet fighters and drones, killing at least 20 militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or Taliban Pakistan. The official dismissed Afghan claims of civilian casualties as "baseless and misleading."
