In a tragic turn of events, a Cessna 207 plane has crashed in a densely forested, hard-to-reach area in Quitupan, Jalisco, leaving an initial seven fatalities, according to the Jalisco State Civil Protection Unit (UEPCJ). The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Rescue teams, in coordination with authorities from Quitupan and Mazamitla, rushed to the site near the Palo Verde settlement in Quitupan to attend to the emergency. The plane had taken off from La Parota, Michoacán, but the identities of the deceased and the intended destination of the Cessna 207 have yet to be confirmed.

Personnel from the Secretariat of National Defense also participated to secure the crash site and preserve any evidence that could help determine the cause of the aerial accident. They worked to extinguish the fire caused by the impact and mitigated risks to prevent further damage in the area. At the time of reporting, they awaited forensic authorities to proceed with the retrieval of bodies and confirm the absence of more victims.

The municipalities of Quitupan and Mazamitla, as well as their neighboring territories of Santa María del Oro and Valle de Juárez, share borders with Michoacán. This region has witnessed constant clashes between the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel and the Michoacán-based criminal organization known as Cárteles Unidos for at least two years.

Recent events in the area include the seizure of mortars, explosives, and grenade launchers, along with training camps, particularly in Quitupan. A ominous sign of escalating violence is the assassination of Cotija‘s mayor, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, and the resignation under duress of Juan Pablo Aguilar, the incoming mayor of the same municipality.

Just last month, on December 16, an attack involving armed drones and explosives took place in the Gallineros community of Cotija, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to five military personnel.

Authorities have yet to release further details about the victims or the cause of the plane crash. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
