Victim in New York Metro Arson Attack Identified

A week after the horrifying incident on a Brooklyn subway train, the identity of the woman fatally burned beyond recognition has been revealed. She was 57-year-old Debrina Kawam, a resident of Toms River, New Jersey.

CCTV footage, reportedly obtained from multiple sources, shows Kawam resting against a train door in the Coney Island station on the F line. Suddenly, flames engulfed her, her body literally transformed into a moving inferno. The grotesque scene, though graphic and deeply disturbing, left an indelible impression on commuters who witnessed it firsthand and subsequently shared it with authorities.

Initially, officials mistook her age, identifying her as a 61-year-old woman. But DNA testing and fingerprint analysis finally helped to ascertain her correct age and identify her by name. Medical examiner Julie Bolcer confirmed this Monday.

"Finding out who she was became a priority," Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez shared in a recent press conference. The police went above and beyond in their search to identify Kawam, meticulously collecting forensic evidence, meticulously reviewing video surveillance, and using every means necessary to get the job done.

Kawam’s life ended in one of the most chilling acts of violence witnessed on public transportation in recent history. 33-year-old Sebastian Zapata-Calil, already under arrest for setting Kawam on fire, is now also being charged with murder in the first degree. If found guilty, he faces up to life in prison.

With every passing day, the case garners increased national attention. Yet, this particular story will be remembered, not just as an unfortunate chapter in New York City’s ongoing efforts to enhance its public transit, but also as a harsh, haunting testament to human nature’s dualistic potential – and the consequences that follow from unleashing that dark side.

Our thoughts go out to the victim’s family. May she find the justice and peace that such a horrible crime denies.
