Police announced on Tuesday that they have solved the murder of 41-year-old Yanis Yushayev of Or Akiva, who was shot dead last month at a gas station in Caesarea. Authorities filed a prosecutor’s declaration against the primary suspect, 54-year-old Doron Weizman, a Hazon resident with a criminal record who has previously served prison sentences.
Investigation Opened After August 23 Caesarea Shooting
The investigation began on August 23 following a report of a man being shot at the Caesarea gas station. Medical teams arriving at the scene pronounced Yushayev dead. According to police, investigators from the Coastal District Central Unit conducted both covert and overt investigative activity utilizing technological, intelligence, and forensic means.
Police suspect that several of Yushayev’s enemies joined forces and devised a plan to kill him. During the inquiry, officers arrested four suspects. These arrests included a 23-year-old man from Hadera who is the son of Yushayev’s most prominent rival. Investigators found that the 23-year-old, who has ties to senior criminals, was in a vehicle used by the killers and that his DNA samples were present inside the car. However, police were unable to prove his direct involvement in planning the murder despite using various investigative tactics during his questioning.
Suspect Maintained Right to Silence as Others Were Released
Several suspects arrested during the investigation were subsequently released, leaving only Weizman detained as the man police suspect of having pulled the trigger. The court has periodically extended Weizman’s detention. Throughout questioning, Weizman has maintained his right to silence.
The Central Unit holds a working theory regarding the background and motive for the murder. Because only Weizman is expected to be indicted, whoever allegedly sent him remains free. Additionally, individuals suspected of helping Weizman prepare for the killing, escape, and go into hiding are not currently facing charges.
Attorney Yaron Shomron, who represents Weizman, told Walla that he would wait to see the indictment before responding.
Haifa District Attorney Expected to File Indictment
Following the completion of investigative measures, police announced on Tuesday that an evidentiary basis had been established against Weizman. The Haifa District Attorney’s Office, which accompanied the investigation, is expected to file an indictment against Weizman in the coming days. Prosecutors will likely request that he remain in custody until the conclusion of legal proceedings.
