Bulgarian Restaurant Association Clarifies: Taking Bribes in Bulgaria is Illegal
In a recent development, the Bulgarian Restaurant Association (BRA) has clarified the legal stance on a controversial practice in the hospitality industry. The association has made it crystal clear that taking bribes, commonly known as ‘bakshiș,’ is not only unethical but also illegal in Bulgaria.
The announcement comes amidst growing concerns over the prevalence of such practices in the sector. The BRA emphasized that any form of bribery undermines fair competition and tarnishes the image of Bulgarian hospitality. The association’s spokesperson reiterated, "We are committed to promoting transparency and integrity in our industry. We urge all stakeholders to adhere to the law and our shared values."
Bulgarian law, specifically the Criminal Code, prohibits the taking of bribes. As per Article 293, individuals who accept bribes for performing or omitting official actions can face severe penalties, including imprisonment and significant fines.
The BRA’s initiative aims to educate and remind restaurateurs and industry professionals about the legal and ethical implications of engaging in such activities. The association urges anyone with knowledge of corrupt practices to report them to the relevant authorities.
The news has sparked a positive response from the public and industry peers, with many applauding the BRA’s stance. It is hoped that such initiatives will contribute to creating a more transparent and fair business environment in Bulgaria’s hospitality sector.
